who we are
Hello, this is Irene, Elizabeth, and Susan! We are rising juniors at Yale University from Southern California and Indiana who, like many others, are devastated by the detrimental effects of the COVID-19 outbreak in many communities around us.
WHY we started NURSINGHOMEPPE:
Given the present COVID-19 outbreak, our healthcare heroes on the front lines are experiencing an extreme shortage of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). The coronavirus has hit many nursing homes particularly hard, yet long-term care facilities like these are often overlooked in the healthcare system and are now having trouble getting the basic protective equipment they need to protect their staff and patients due to hospitals' more highly prioritized needs. However, the rate of fatality or severe illness is much higher for the elderly and immunocompromised patients found in the small, confined, and close living arrangements of nursing homes. The shortage of PPE for nursing home workers and patients has accelerated the spread of the virus, subsequently leaving nurses, residents, and their families at a much higher risk.
We started NursingHomePPE in California to help centralize and facilitate PPE donations to our healthcare heroes who are caring for patients in nursing homes.
moving forward together:
So far, we have connected and delivered multiple PPE donations to nursing homes throughout Northern and Southern California. Most recently, we have started expanding to serve nursing homes in other areas around the country, including Washington D.C. and New Haven, Connecticut.
Our team of volunteers have joined us from states across the nation and have come together with their diverse backgrounds to serve local communities in need. Currently, we have been focusing on larger, non-profit nursing homes (with greater than 100 residents) or nursing homes with at least one confirmed positive case of COVID-19 in communities that have been hit hardest by this outbreak, but we hope to expand to smaller, for-profit nursing homes that need our help as well.
We are excited to be partnering with #GetUsPPE, PVNet Academy for STEM, and US FIRST Robotics Team 7157: µBotics to get even more PPE donations to nursing homes throughout California, the Washington, D.C. area, and the Northeastern region of the United States.
We would especially like to thank #GetUsPPE and DonatePPE.org for becoming our role models, as well as California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform for providing us with an accessible list of nursing homes in California.
